**DOUBLE REVIEW** ~ When in Rome (An Unexpected Vacation, book 1 and The Emperor’s Dungeon, book 2), by Jessica Nyman

Erotic Time Slip Fantasy

18+/Adult Read

I could not resist reviewing the first two instalments of When in Rome, an erotic time slip tale, written by Jessica Nyman. Historical erotica and erotic romance are after all amongst my favourite reads and I just love tales of Ancient Romans! I found both instalments to be a fun and erotic take on what happens when a 21st century girl meets one of Rome’s most notorious emperors.

Fellow history geeks take note: On the subject of infamous characters from history, do pop over to the author’s blog where she has a fascinating post about the truth and lies about the Roman emperor featured in this series. I’ve recently been immersing myself in the literature separating truth from fiction in the case of Richard III, and I just love debates such as this . Tina ❤

An Unexpected Vacation: A Sizzling Hot Historical Erotic Romance (When In Rome Book 1)

Blurb

Jessica Nyman 1A young and geeky college girl wins a trip to Rome and while visiting the ancient ruins, she gets transported two thousand years back by a mysterious magic artifact. She is immediately seized by the city guards and brought before the most notorious emperor Rome had ever known. She’s in for a big surprise and some hot, steamy, action beyond her wildest dreams.

When In Rome Vol 1: An Unexpected Vacation is the first part of an erotic romance serial short stories exploring the lifestyle of ancient Rome from the eyes of a twenty first century college girl. Approximately 7000 words.

My Review

A Fun Erotic Read ****

In An Unexpected Vacation, the heroine, a college student, wins a weekend in Rome, the eternal city. After purchasing a silver locket from an antique shop she visits the Palatine Hill and finds herself magically transported back 2000 years into Rome’s past… It is there she finds herself at the court of, wait for it, the infamous emperor Caligula, who wields the power of life and death over all his subjects……

Her terror swiftly turns to passion as she becomes seduced by this man whose heart does not appear to be as black as history has painted him. Caligula is keen to instruct this strange barbarian into his ways. What follows is a fun and erotic foray into Ancient Rome and in particular the sexual mores of its young and extremely virile emperor which the heroine is more than happy to participate in – cue a number of sizzling scenes of a carnal nature!

Jessica Nyman packs a lot into this short read and I was eager to find out what happens in the next instalment!

The Emperor’s Dungeon: A Sizzling Hot Historical Erotic Romance Featuring Hardcore Bondage (When In Rome Book 2)

Blurb

Jessica nyman 2Our heroine meets a mysterious witch who agrees to help her go back to ancient Rome. However the locket’s magic effects last for a limited time and she comes back to the 21st century when it expires. Will she be able to solve the mystery of the locket and stay in ancient Rome for good? Will she break and tell her secret when the emperor ties her up in heavy chains and ‘interrogates’ her in the dungeon?

When In Rome Vol 2: The Emperor’s Dungeon is the second part of an erotic romance serial short stories exploring ancient Rome from the eyes of a twenty first century college girl. Approximately 5000 words.

My Review

Secrets Will Out! ****

The heroine finds herself unexpectedly returned back to her own time by magic she does not fully comprehend. She is desperate to return to her lover Caligula and seeks high and low for an explanation of how to invoke the magical powers of the locket which she knows is responsible for her journey to and from the past. When she does return however it is to a Caligula who is not totally happy with her disappearance and who whisks her away to his dungeon to force her to spill her secrets and satisfy his lust….

Our heroine is desperate to prevent history repeating herself with regards to Caligula’s future yet she also has to wrestle with the thorny issue of ensuring that her very presence in Ancient Rome do not change the future.

As with the first instalment, I hugely enjoyed this read and I am eager to see how this series pans out.

With her blond tresses and blue eyes, London fabric retailer Margery “Margie” Tull is used to being admired. When she’s hired to decorate a riverside manor house though, she suspects ulterior motives.

Lord of the manor Percival Winstanley reveals a long ago love triangle leading to death and the bewitching of his son and heir Stephen. Margie’s cousin Shyan is supposed to protect her. But he’s lured away by Winstanley’s cougarish housekeeper, Mrs. DePlessey, leaving Margie in the dubious care of servant Kern.

Unsure whom to trust, Margie turns first to artist Raphael Watts, also working at the house. Meanwhile Stephen hovers in the background trying to draw her attention to a cottage across the river. Somehow the women who live there are a portent of Margie’s fate. If only Stephen can convince her of what lies in store Margie can give new hope to the manor and its heir.

Excerpt:

Margie crept from the hall to the library and back again. It was the strangest thing how people either were not there when they were wanted or were breathing down your neck and scaring you out of your skin. There seemed no middle way in this house.

She would have to go upstairs. It was the obvious place to look. She started climbing steps, feeling like an intruder and unsure how she would explain why she was snooping around the house if she did find someone. A snigger told her she was on the right track. Tiptoeing across the landing and down a passage way, she homed in on the intertwined voices, Shyan’s wisecracks and Mrs. DePlessey’s purrs of appreciation.

Through the gap between an open bedroom door and the jamb, Margie watched unobserved. Shyan was standing on a foot stool wearing only underwear. Evidently measuring requirements had reached the upper thigh. A crouching Mrs. DePlessey’s glistening nails trailed a tape over the city boy’s pale flanks. Shyan’s muscles tensed as her fingers neared the straining material of his briefs.

“Am I tickling?” The question was made to sound guileless, like a dentist asking “Am I hurting you?”

“Well a bit,” Shyan said. “But it don’t bother me.”

I’ll bet it doesn’t, Margie thought. She was so mad at him. Had he forgotten why he had come? Not to dally with the housekeeper, that’s for sure.

The waistband was the next number on Mrs. DePlessey’s list, and as her arms circumnavigated Shyan’s midriff with the tape measure she could not refrain from rubbing the bangles on her wrists against his bare skin. The metal must have been cold, because Shyan jumped slightly at the touch.

“Oh, I am sorry. Did I do that?”

You calculating bitch, Margie wanted to shriek. She’d seen better acting on the soaps.

But there was nothing simulated about Shyan’s reaction once the tape made contact at the base of his spine. Margie didn’t have to see below his waistband to know his self-control was on the edge. It wouldn’t take much to unbalance him.

All it did take was another move in Mrs. DePlessey’s repertoire of suggestive contact. As her breasts prodded his stomach, ostensibly so she could complete the tape loop, Shyan’s hands descended onto her shoulders. Then the tape was forgotten as her lips came up to meet his. Her clasping arms steadied him on the wobbling stool. They moved to the bed in an uncoordinated tango, and toppled into a grinding embrace. Shyan tackled the buttons on her blouse. His hand groped for the bra clip at her back. He suckled on an inflamed turret of a nipple, with a gusto equal to Ainsworth’s effort during Margie’s previous spying escapade. Then the couple’s hands met and, steered by one or the other—or both—glided in unison down the crevasse between their bodies until they disappeared inside Shyan’s briefs.

Margie was mesmerized. Exasperated as she was by her cousin’s easy compliance, she couldn’t help being fascinated by this mesh of desires. That was why it was so startling when Mrs. DePlessey rolled Shyan to one side and, with a light kiss on the lips, told him, “We must save this.”

Shyan gaped and attempted to insert a hand between her closed thighs.

“For what?” he asked.

She smiled, not in the provocative way Margie half expected, but rather as if Shyan hadn’t understood.

“In time,” she said. “In time.”

**REVIEW** ~ Perilous Play: The Real Fifty Shades, by Suz deMello

Adult/18+ Read

With the boom in erotic BDSM themed fiction reaching new heights many of us are now indulging in reads which explore themes of dominance and submission. We may be reading about practices which are unfamiliar to us and some may wish to go a step further and experiment ourselves. Perilous Play by Suz deMello, which chronicles her own experiences of BDSM, is an essential read for those who wish to find out more about the realities of the world. It is also a cracking good read! Tina 🙂

perilous play

 Blurb

One woman’s journey into the contemporary kink underworld, Perilous Play is Suz deMello’s explosive personal account of her experiences with BDSM. Engaging and honest, this groundbreaking memoir will grab you and never let you go.

My Review *****

Candid Memoir

Perilous Play is a candid and page-turning account of the author’s first-hand experience of BDSM. It is most definitely a recommended read for anyone thinking about delving into the lifestyle as it pulls back the curtains on this world and sets out its pitfalls, dilemmas and joys, through the author’s own eyes. It will also be of interest to those like myself who enjoy reading BDSM themed erotica/erotic romance, as it gives a deeper understanding of the many issues, physical and emotional which participants face.

The book reads as a memoir, rather than a textbook, and sets out the author’s journey into BDSM, from her very first experience through to her current level of interest. I found that this format made for a highly entertaining and frank read, where few stones were left unturned. A number of key themes are addressed including the importance of negotiation; factors which make a good and bad dominant; polygamy and ménage and role play. Throughout there is much stress on the importance of good communication and the emphasis on play being safe, sane and consensual.

I really enjoyed the author’s open style of writing, which tells it like it is. There are plenty of detailed descriptions of various BDSM themed scenes which she uses to illustrate her journey and we get to know a number of individuals who have partnered her over the years.

I recommend the read to those who are curious about BDSM or are thinking about dipping their toes in the water.

Excerpt:

Captain Hugh Wilkes sucked in a deep breath, steeling himself for the heat he was about to be subjected to, though he already knew all the deep breaths in the world wouldn’t help. Darkness had fallen on Camp Bastion, in the notorious Helmand Province of Afghanistan, but there would still be residual warmth left to seep away throughout the small hours. Then the sun would rise, and it would start all over again. It was a damn desert, after all. But, all being well, it would be his last ever tour of the godforsaken place. The British Army was already preparing to pull out. The manpower had been reduced drastically over the previous months. It was time to leave the Afghans to get on with it. They weren’t being abandoned—far from it—they would still receive aid, training and money for years to come. But the British Army was no longer needed, apparently. It was still a volatile place, which would no doubt be monitored very closely, in case strategies needed to be reconsidered.

None of that was down to Wilkes, though. He was here with his platoon for six months, doing whatever they were ordered to do by their Company Commander, Major Hunter. It was unlikely they’d be doing any fighting—they weren’t here for offensive operations. More probably they’d be accompanying their vehicles, weapons and ammunition across the country as it was transported to the air base to be sent back home, or patrolling towns and villages as a show of presence, to reassure and protect the inhabitants.

There was only one way to find out. Grabbing his kit, he headed toward the ramp of the huge C17 aircraft with his colleagues, and followed them out onto the airstrip. Immediately, he was hit by the overwhelming smell of aviation fuel. As he moved away from the airplane this was replaced by the dry atmosphere.

Wilkes imagined he could feel the grains of sand coating his throat and tongue. He’d soon get used to it—he always did. Plus, on the bright side, he’d end up with a nice tan at the end of his deployment. Mentally, he crossed his fingers for a nice, event-free tour of duty. Letting his guard down wasn’t going to happen, naturally, he just hoped it wasn’t necessary. Hoped the insurgents would play nicely. The country was completely different to how it had been when Allied forces had gone in after 9/11. Some fantastic progress had been made, but it still wasn’t completely safe. But then, where was? People died in picturesque villages in the English countryside—though generally not courtesy of IEDs, AK-47s or suicide bombers.
