*REVIEW* – The Assassin’s Wife, by Nikita Slater

Blurb

A standalone dark captive romance novel by USA Today Bestselling Author Nikita Slater.

With this ring…

With a career as a prima ballerina and married to the man of her dreams, Natasha’s life was a fairytale. Then she witnessed something she shouldn’t have. Now she’s on the run, fleeing the one person she thought she’d love forever. Her husband.

To love and to cherish.

He should’ve seen her following him, should have known that curiosity would get the better of her. Now she’s gone and he’s on the hunt. He’ll find his wayward wife, and when he does, he’ll show her the monster she thought to escape.

For better or worse.

Trapped with a man obsessed with revenge, Natasha must weather the storm and hope that he’ll remember their once fierce love before he does something they’ll both regret.

Until death do us part.

The Assassin’s Wife is a standalone dark captive romance novel. It contains themes of violence and sexual content that some readers may find offensive.

My Review

Dark Captive Romance – 5 stars

This is a dark and emotionally complex read from start to finish. David is very much the anti-hero, devoid of morals and empathy and initially there was little if anything to make me warm to him. Natasha, a young ballerina is his polar opposite and his obsession. I found it terrifying how he casually ‘acquires’ Natasha, after becoming obsessed with her when he witnesses her on stage, taking her away from pursuing her dreams. That said, I was hooked, wanting to find out how their relationship would develop, what motivates David and if there was any hope for his redemption.

My heart was in my mouth when he finally caught up with Natasha after her escape – it’s a heated and visceral scene. The author does an excellent job of creating ongoing suspense and conflict between the couple as the plot develops. Will Natasha keep her life and her sanity with such a violent and controlling man? What will he do if she once again steps out of line? How can she reconcile her complex feelings for him when her freedom is at stake? The sex scenes between them sizzle but the trigger warning contained in the blurb relating to violence and sexual content is there for a reason.

I enjoyed how Natasha’s actions continue to test her captor and how her emotional strength and resilience grows. This young woman has had so much thrown at her by David and I silently applauded her each time she stood her ground. David’s character also undergoes some change – there are a number of heart wrenching points where his icy exterior cracks, but I still felt he was a monster at the end – just Natasha’s monster. He is nevertheless one of the most memorable anti-heroes I have read in the genre.

Recommended for readers of dark romance.

*REVIEW* – Frost to Dust (The Last Tritan #2), by Myra Danvers

#DarkFantasy

In a place where even the slightest vulnerability is an open invitation for disaster, their bond is a lure for powerful men to strike without mercy.

On her knees but not defeated, Mila must choose. Give in to Asher and embrace her power…

Or let them both fall…

Goodreads

My Review – 5 stars

Passionate and Intense – a brilliant read!

The latest instalment in Mila and Asher’s story is fast-paced, passionate and intense, crackling with raw emotions. As the book before it, Flame to Frost, I found it to be another brilliant dark fantasy read.

The the battle of wits between Asher and his captive priestess Mila is just exquisite to read. The scenes where they are together are smoking hot and the book is also cleverly plotted and populated with well-drawn characters. Mila continues to defy her captor at every turn, a task that is so much more difficult since they are now linked. She is not only subject to Asher’s control, but also the rules of others of his ilk, the hated invaders who destroyed her homeland.

I hugely enjoyed the descriptions of the couple’s bond and the magic that swirls in and around them and others. Mila’s magic is untamed and wild and she has so many internal battles as she attempts to gain control over her powers and her developing relationship with Asher, a member of the enemy Elite. She despises him for what he represents and what he makes her do and feel – Asher is an Alpha through and through and he will be obeyed. There is a lot going on behind the scenes, with hidden agendas and plots aplenty.

When it all unravels and comes to the crunch what will Mila and Asher do, as their bond means that their survival is linked? I was literally swept away by their story and blown away by the ending which I did not see coming. I cannot wait to read the next instalment to see what happens next!

Readers of dark fantasy who like a smoking and highly charged captor/captive or enemies to lovers trope will love this story.

*REVIEW* ~ Unhinged: A Dark Romance by Nicole Cypher

#darkromance #dark #erotic #romantic #thriller

Adult read

Book Blurb

You’d have to be crazy to want a killer.

I was nobody. A deranged widow.

He was a psychopath with me as his next target.

When he took me from my home, he planned to kill me. The creepy room I woke up in with fluorescent lighting and an assortment of knives was evidence enough.

Then he saw my scars, and something changed.

Instead of killing me, he wants to fix me.

I might be crazy, but he’s completely Unhinged.

My Review

Two broken and twisted characters… ~ 4 stars

Unhinged is a dark romantic thriller, which delves into the psychology of two crazy as f*** characters who are both extremely worthy of the title! I thoroughly enjoyed the read and was intrigued by both the hero/anti-hero and heroine from the off. Although it took me a few chapters to warm to them both, very soon I was rooting for their unlikely and elusive HEA.

It is a bloody, violent and sometimes gruesome read which contains reference to abuse and coercive control. James is a psychopath who abducts, tortures and kills those who deserve to have justice meted out upon them due to past sins they have committed. The young widow Holly is his next mark, but once he has her in his clutches, rather than kill her he decides she is worthy of fixing. It is here that the couple begin to develop their unorthodox captor/captive relationship which is fraught with danger and suspense and also ghosts from both characters’ pasts.

Can Holly escape James’ clutches before this unstable man changes his mind about her fate? Does she want to? Can she, who has her own breed of craziness to cope with, be fixed? Can she fix her captor and is there any chance of redemption or a HEA for the couple.

An unusual but addictive read. Highly recommended for lovers of dark romance.

Dark & Kinkilicious

Adult/18+ Read

wolfe

Kiara may be taken past the point of survival.

Be careful who you dare to betray.

WARNING
This is a dark romance and written to be disturbing.

You’ll find some graphic scenes of violence and sex within these pages, plus a smidgen of horror. Though the ending may be sweet, this is a very kinky, twisted, and dark story

My Review ~ 5 dark and kinky stars!

#dark #romance #dubiousconsent #bdsm

I SO loved this sinful and morally questionable capture fantasy, a dark re-telling of Beauty and the Beast! It is a sexy as f*** adult read which pushed my buttons on all fronts. It is without doubt a MUST read for fans of dark romance.

When nurse Kiara attempts to kidnap Wolfe, a patient in her care, she soon finds that the tables are turned and the captor becomes the captive. Wolfe has unexplained superhuman powers and there is absolutely NO way he will allow his nurse to hand him over to anyone, whatever the consequences. Besides he wants to have some fun with Kiara, using his terrifying powers to bend her to his will and satisfy his animalistic desires, before he decides whether to kill her for her deception….

The read is dark, dirty and depraved (in spades). Much of the plot focuses on Kiara and Wolfe and the shifting power relations between them. Wolfe is truly terrifying in his animalistic form, controlling and bending Kiara with his superpowers and also with anything else he lays his hands on… The author surely has one devilish imagination as Wolfe delivers torture and punishment to this woman he craves to possess in every way imaginable! Yet strangely Kiara finds that being the captive of the beast is not always bad, especially as she hungers after his dominant touch….

The darkness and depravity is tempered by the complex romance which develops between the couple. Yet will Wolfe’s animalistic desires herald Kiria’s demise? Will she be able to tame the Beast? Will those who desire his capture ever give up their quest for him?

I binged on the book in one sitting. It is an addictive read and if you like the heroes in the books you read to be dark and beastly, the sex deviant and kinky and the heroines up for the challenge every which way they can (and more besides) you will LOVE this read.

**REVIEW** ~ The Con Artist, by Kitty Thomas

Dark Literary Erotica

Adult/18+ Read

This book is intended for an emotionally mature adult audience and contains dark themes. This title is a stand alone (not part of a series.)

The Con Artist

Book Blurb

Art. Obsession. Twisted possession.

When starving artist Saskia Roth meets Lachlan Niche, a local art collector and tech tycoon, she has no idea how her life is about to change. One act of desperation, one con gone wrong, and she finds herself at the mercy of a powerful man she fears and despises–or so she thinks at first. As lines begin to blur, her life as his captive becomes something more… something that will both transform her and destroy her.

My Review ***** (5 Stars)

Dark, Brutal and Obsessive

The Con Artist is classic Kitty Thomas – dark, brutal and obsessive mind- f****** at its best!

The read is an intense portrayal of the relationship between Lachlan, a tortured artist and Saskia, his muse, who he is determined to debase, own and control in his quest for their respective inspiration. The lines of consent are blurred, love in the traditional sense is absent, and the erotic scenes are deliciously dark and also deeply psychological as they explore the evolving relationships inherent in the plot.

The world Lachlan inhabits is one of untold wealth and depravity, into which the unsuspecting Saskia becomes trapped, on account of her own actions and Lachlan’s duplicity. She is totally at his mercy and becomes his captive in every sense of the word. Hatred soon morphs into a need and attraction so strong that she struggles to reject her own twisted desires as well as those of her captor, despite knowing that her acceptance and submission can only result in her ultimate destruction of self.

I will not reveal much of the plot, as it would  ruin the reading experience – suffice to say that once I downloaded his book and started to read, I was compelled to finish it! There are harsh and unforgiving scenes of BDSM and consent is used as a method by which Lachlan, incapable of the love Saskia craves, constantly tests and controls her.

Kitty Thomas’ writing is flawless, contrasting with the savage beauty of the tale and the darkness of its protagonists. There is no traditional HEA, although the ending definitely befits the complex relationships in the story. If you are familiar with Kitty Thomas’ work you will love it. Recommended for dark romance junkies everywhere!

FUNNY HOW LIFE plays practical jokes.

The past few days—that had to be a fucking joke, right?

No logical answer would make sense of what I’d seen, heard, and lived the past seventy-two hours.

My sister.

My best friend and twin.

This was what she’d been living with? This was how she’d been treated?

This was what she wanted to return to?

Motherfucking why? Why would she ever want to return to this insanity?

We’d been raised in a broken home, chained to an empire that absorbed us right from birth. But we were kept safe, warm, and loved. We grew up together. We shared everything.

But now…I had no fucking clue who my sister was.

But then she came to me.

A woman I never knew existed.

The most stunning creature I’d ever seen.

Only she didn’t come to me on feet or wings of an angel. She rolled into my life and demanded my help.

And for better or for worse…

I helped her.

nila

“LET ME GO!”

Daniel cackled like a mad hyena, his fingers stabbing into my bicep. Without breaking his stride, he stole me further away from the parlour and into the bowels of the house.

I didn’t want to go. I didn’t want to go anywhere with him.

“Take me back!”

He can’t be dead!

Just because he lay unmoving and bloody didn’t mean he was gone.

That’s exactly what it means.

I shook my head, dislodging those awful thoughts. He’s alive. He had to be.

I couldn’t tolerate any other answer. I refused to live in a world where evil triumphed over good. That wasn’t right—life couldn’t be that cruel.

It’s always been that way.

My mind filled with images of my mother. My father’s desolation. My broken childhood. Evil had puppeteered us from day one. Why should now be any different?

He’s not dead!

I swallowed a sob.

Please don’t be dead…

I fought harder. “Let me see him. You can’t do this!”

Daniel cackled louder. “Keep begging, Weaver. Won’t do you any good.”

He’s not dead!

I locked my knees, fighting him every step. “Stop!” Looking back the way we’d come, the door to the parlour seemed so far away—a bright beacon at the end of a festering corridor. “They were your brothers, you insane psychopath. Don’t you feel anything?!”

Please let me go to him. He has to be alive…

Please let my twin stay alive…

Let all of this be a nightmare!

I couldn’t cope with Jethro murdered; I’d go clinically insane if they killed V, too.

“I feel relief. I no longer have to put up with their simpering bullshit.” He flashed his teeth. “Cut did us all a favour.”

Cut will die.

He was evil incarnate. He deserved to die in excruciatingly painful ways.

I refuse to believe they’re dead.

“I said stop!” I wriggled harder, only succeeding in Daniel’s fingers tearing into my flesh. Goosebumps covered my skin while ice steadily froze my veins. Every second was endless torture. I couldn’t live without Jethro.

It can’t end like this!

“You won’t win, Weaver.” Daniel tugged harder. “Accept what’s fucking happened and obey me.”

Queen Elizabeth sits on England’s throne. A once Catholic country is now ruled by a Protestant queen. In a time of fear, turmoil and bold deeds, many heroes are seldom written into history…

After aiding in the capture of the flagship Rosario and helping to defeat the Spanish Armada, Sir Henry Bainbridge is set to make his mark on the world and strengthen his position as a man of authority. Now in charge of the Spanish prisoners, Henry must negotiate their return to Spain and manage the care of his people.

However, when he comes across a woman amongst the survivors, his future plans are put on hold. The exotic beauty draws him in and his honour will not let him doing anything other than protect her. Henry takes her into his home and places her under house arrest. He can only hope his principles are enough to protect her from his desires…

In a time when small differences spark fear into the heart of many, Antonia finds herself drawn into a battle between a zealous priest, a discontented population and the most honourable man she’s ever met. Excerpt

The ship seemed to come apart beneath his feet. It propelled him forward and he snatched whatever part of Antonia he could grab to haul her close. His fingers met a bunch of fabric, and he yanked her to him and drew her to her feet. She tried to get away again but he was prepared this time and wrapped his arms about her.

“We need to get off.”

She shook her head. “My father!”

Smoke was beginning to rise out of the hull. Men poured onto the deck, but he couldn’t see her father. His men frantically ushered them over the side of the ship to the waiting boats. He stepped around the steadily growing cracks in the wood and grimaced as the mast swayed and creaked. The ship didn’t have long.

He shoved Antonia into Will’s arms. “Ensure she gets into a boat.” He turned his attention to the dark-eyed woman. “I’ll get your father.”

She nodded, her lips pulled into a tight line of fear. Henry turned away before he could regret his decision. Will would see her to safety. The gut-sickening sound of men’s cries sliced through him, like a baby’s wail calling to its mother. It wasn’t the first time he’d heard sounds like that, and yet it still made him stiffen and determination burned in his belly. He’d been tasked with capturing these Spanish and he’d damn well do it. None would burn or drown on his watch.

Henry raced down the stairs and covered his mouth with his arm. Smoke made his eyes water. Ghostly creaks rattled through the ship. She was taking on water though it hadn’t reached the deck below. He could hear the sea swallowing her, drawing her down to her doom. But the fire hadn’t been doused. Heat touched his skin and he suspected that not far beneath him could be a raging inferno.

Several men pushed past him—his own men. He peered into the gloom and stalked past the canons. The ship gave another shuddering moan and tilted aft. He gripped some rope hanging from the roof and forged forward.

“De Valdés!” he called, almost choking on a lungful of acrid smoke. When he neared the galley, he paused. Over the sound of the foundering ship, a cry for help reached his ears. He pivoted and raced to the fore, narrowly avoiding tripping over loose shot and ropes. There, near the front, was Antonia’s father—pinned by a strut of wood that must have fallen from the roof.

When he peered closer, he noted de Valdés wasn’t the only one caught. A young officer had also become trapped. Henry grimaced. He didn’t look alive.

Henry wasted no time in gripping the plank at one end and dragging it from the commander, wincing from the effort. His muscles pulled in protest, his lungs burned with exertion and smoke inhalation. He cast it aside and did a cursory inspection of the lad. Dead, for certain.

“Can you walk?” he called to the older man.

He nodded, dragged himself to his feet and propped himself against the rear wall. Even in the gloom, pain dug deep grooves in his features. Henry suspected a broken leg. God’s teeth, they didn’t have time for this. He snatched the man’s arm, flung it over his shoulder and they made their way all too slowly to the stairs.

A moan rumbled through the ship. She tilted farther, heeding their progress yet more. He practically dragged the commander up the steps and they both took a moment to swallow gulps of fresh air. Henry surveyed the deck and saw most had abandoned ship.

Except…damn her. He passed her father over to Will. “A broken leg,” he shouted. “You’ll have to lower him down. As soon as he’s in, abandon ship.”

Antonia was already hurrying to his side from the quarter deck but before she reached them, a crack splintered the air. Henry’s skin prickled. He glanced up and saw the middle mast sway. The ship was now at an angle—slightly back, slightly to one side. The mast began to tilt that way too and as it went, it ripped the quarter deck with it, sending Antonia sprawling. He half-expected her to be swallowed into the bowels of the ship before he stormed up the stairs to her side, but he reached her before the mast fell.

As the deck splintered into what seemed like a hundred pieces, he snatched his arms around her and dragged her onto the main deck. The ship spit up shards of wood around them. She wasn’t going down without a fight, but she seemed determined to take them with her. Henry glanced back to see Will and de Valdés were gone. He tightened his grip on Antonia and wrapped a hand around the railing. They’d be lucky to make it to the longboats waiting in the water. “We need to jump.”

“No. My father.”

“He’s safe.” Henry had no way of knowing that, but he wouldn’t have this woman on the ship any longer. “Can you swim?”

She nodded.

He helped her up onto the railing. Her body trembled beneath his palms. “Jump now.” His world tilted further. “Jump!”

She flew over the edge, her hair streaming out behind her. He couldn’t hear the splash as he tore off his doublet and undid his belt. He flung both aside, regretting that he’d lose his blade. That had been a fine blade. Clambering onto the side, he took a breath and dove.

REVIEW – *Taken by the Sheikh* (Boxed Set), by Christina Phillips, Mel Teshco and Cathleen Ross

Erotic Contemporary Romances

Sheer Indulgence! *****

Three Desert Sheikhs, three captive brides……

SHEIKH Boxed WebBound by duty to honor their father’s dying wish, three royal brothers must marry their destined brides… by whatever means necessary…

One of my Top Reads for 2014

This boxed set was just what I needed to combat the cold winter nights, containing not one but THREE desert hotties to fulfill my fantasies.… I really liked the overarching plot which linked the three stories and characters together. Also kudos to the authors for exploring the cultural differences between the heroes and their three chosen brides and the self-sacrifices those in their position are expected to make for their country. Of course the scorching love making scenes, of which there are many (frantically fanning self) were also a definite plus! Scroll down for the book blurbs and for my reviews. Tina 🙂

There is only one way Shahzad can guarantee she will be his queen … and he isn’t above using force to get it.

Book 2: The Sheikh’s Mistaken Bride ~ Christina Phillips

In order to secure a powerful alliance for his country, Khalid has no choice but to marry a neighboring princess. It’s not what he wants, but duty must come before pleasure. Yet when he meets the beautiful Sanura he changes his mind… only to discover the virgin in his bed is not his destined bride.

My Reviews

Sheer Indulgence!

Erotic Contemporary Romances

Book 1: Hostage to the Sheikh ~ Mel Teshco  *****

Mel Teshco’s Hostage to the Sheikh kicks off this sheikh love fest: To secure peace for his beloved homeland and the continuation of his dynasty Shahzad prepares to do his duty and marry the woman  selected for him. I loved how bowled over he is by the very sight of Lexi, his unsuspecting bride, who is so refreshingly different to the women he is used to. Observing Lexi from afar he realises that she may not come quietly, and I loved the masterful way he kidnaps her in an emotionally charged and oh so sexy scene! Please note that I am particularly fond of the captor/captive romantic fantasy, where the kidnapper turns out to be ‘the one!’

What follows is a delightfully written tale of seduction amongst the desert sands, where Shahzad tries to convince Lexi to accept her fate. I loved the fact that although she is equally attracted to Shahzad and goes along enthusiastically with their lovemaking, she is no pushover. Indeed, unhappy about being kidnapped and being totally unaware of her Arab lineage, let alone any marriage contract, Lexi has an awful lot to contemplate. This does not prevent the couple from enjoying some sizzling smexing! With a plot that also includes possible threats from rebels and deceit and you have an exciting, emotional and nail biting read.

Book 2: The Sheikh’s Mistaken Bride ~ Christina Phillips *****

Christina Phillips excels at writing erotic romances where the reader experiences each and every emotion felt by the hero and heroines and this was no exception. There are so many emotional ups and downs in this story: one minute I was wiping a tear from my eyes and the next I was immersed in yet another scorching scene between the hero and heroine.

Khalid is my favourite hero from this series, as he is passionate, caring and impetuous. For me fact that he is half French just added to the attraction! At one point however, I did want to smack him, for although he is a real hottie and it is clear he loves Sanura, he does not excel in how he deals with the situation once he realises that he has mistaken Sanura for his bride! Fortunately Sanura is a strong heroine and I really liked how she stood her ground as the tale progressed. I felt Sanura’s heartache but also Khalid’s turmoil too, torn between burgeoning love and duty. Just what is a sheikh to do? I won’t give anything away but I was pleased with how the dilemma resolved itself and loved the dynamics of Khalid and Sanura’s relationship!

Book 3: Sold to the Sheikh ~ Cathleen Ross *****

This read has one of the hottest opening scenes I have ever read, in which the hero and heroine first meet and I was immediately hooked! The way the very dominant Rafi apprehends and abducts May is supremely erotic and I also loved how she tries her best to resist him, despite her attraction. She is desperate to remain in the West for reasons that become clearer as the story progresses. However, the methods Rafi chooses to seduce all her uncertainties away are supremely divine!

Neither Rafi or May are all that they first appear to each other and I enjoyed finding out about them as they revealed themselves to each other not just physically but emotionally as the story progresses. It becomes evident that they have a lot more in common that they first thought. May in particular has a troubled past and I could empathise with her actions.

Rafi is the serious younger brother who blames himself for the death of his parents and who takes his role as head of security very seriously. Although there are certainly a lot of erotic scenes, there is also a lot of action in this story, as the overarching plot is brought to its conclusion and the main characters from all three books are brought together at the end.
