ARC REVIEW – One for the Money, by Skye Warren

#ContemporaryRomance #FakeRelationship

Blurb

Finn Hughes knows about secrets. His family is as wealthy as the Rockefellers. And as powerful as the Kennedys. No one knows that the men in his line have a debilitating, early-onset illness. He’s managed the business from a young age while his father served as the figurehead. All the while knowing there’s a ticking clock on his ability to lead.

Eva Morelli is the oldest daughter. The responsible one. The caring one. The one who doesn’t have time for her own interests.

Especially not her interest in the charismatic, mysterious Finn Hughes.

A fake relationship is the answer to both their problems.

It will keep the swarming society mothers from throwing their daughters at him.

And it will keep Eva’s mother from bothering her about marriage.

Then the fake relationship starts to feel real.

But there’s no chance for them. No hope for a woman who’s had her heart broken. And no future for a man whose fate was decided long ago.

My Review

Oh my poor heart!  – 5 stars

This is such an emotional read and the next book in Finn and Eva’s story cannot come soon enough! The author Skye Warren effortlessly spins the fake relationship trope into a romance which contains humour, friendship and passion, but also the depths of despair. I absolutely loved it and was glued to my Kindle throughout.

It’s a sexy and character driven read with one very beautiful but very stubborn man who believes he has no future and one woman who, despite believing herself immune to love, cannot but fall for his charms once she gets to know the real man behind the playboy façade.

Finn and Eva are both interesting and complex characters and are so, so perfect for each other. I admit I was on the verge of becoming tearful throughout about their predicament.  The read explores the obligations of family and heritage but above all our quest for a soul mate – the book contains plenty of humour and sizzling scenes to act as counterpoints to their plight. I was tearful at various points within the plot. And as for the ending, I NEED the next book, like NOW.

Resisting the Firefighter: Bad Boys of Baltown, by Christina Phillips, Mel Teshco and Cathleen Ross

#ContemporaryRomance #FirefighterRomance

Blurb

Three hot firefighter brothers – and the women they save.
Any way they can…

Book 1 – Resisting Tate by Christina Phillips

Everyone loves a hero… don’t they?

To most people Tate Thompson is a catch. Good looking, funny and a firefighter who has saved plenty of lives. But to Ruby he spells danger.

Still grieving for the loss of her dad, who was also a firefighter and died in the line of duty, there’s no way she can go through that kind of pain again. Except her insides melt when she’s in Tate’s arms. Maybe she should take a chance on him?

Firefighting is in Tate’s blood and he’s never let anything get between him and his job. Until he meets Ruby.

She’s not just sexy as hell. She’s the first person who’s been able to quiet the roar of guilt he’s lived with for half his life. Maybe commitment isn’t such a dirty word, after all?

But when fires ravage the country, both Tate and Ruby must confront their darkest fears if they want a chance of making it together.

Book 2 – Resisting Lachlan by Mel Teshco

Can he save her from herself?

Lachlan might have a well-earned reputation with the ladies, but outside of the bedroom he has a strong moral code. His clients at the gym can’t thank him enough for their health transformations, and when he’s not at work he’s often pulling on his volunteer firefighter suit to help put out fires. Then he spies his new neighbor. Even before they become lovers he knows he wants more than a one night stand. He wants her permanently in his bed. If only he can convince her that losing one man in a fire doesn’t mean she’ll lose him, too.

After a house fire takes the life of her violent husband, Justine leaves the past behind and moves to the outskirts of Baltown. But when bush fires threaten the tinder dry area, and her sexy neighbor turned lover is one of the fire crew risking his life to save others, she realizes she can run again, but she can’t leave survivor guilt behind. But will she face her fears head-on or escape from the one man who might break her heart?

Book 3 – Resisting Adam by Cathleen Ross

Secrets shadow Emma Cain’s life, ones she can’t unlock by herself. When a bushfire threatens the valley she lives in, her ex-boyfriend, firefighter, Adam Thompson, demands she leave her home. Saving her precious cattle means everything to Emma, even if she has to agist them on Adam’s property. His fireproof place is the one safe place, but is it safe for her heart?

Adam Thompson is determined to get Emma back and right the wrongs of the past. Bit by bit he unlocks Emma’s heart, except he is holding on to a secret that could totally destroy her.

My Review – 5 stars

Steam, sass and emotions run high…

A super collection of three sexy and steamy novellas featuring Aussie firefighter siblings, Tate, Lachlan and Adam Thompson, and Ruby, Justine and Emma, the sassy women who turn their lives upside down. The collection contains themes of grief, secrets, ill-health and domestic abuse, all of which are portrayed in a realistic and sensitive way. I particularly loved how each of the couples worked through their respective issues and backstories to reach their HEA. I also enjoyed that each of the romances were very different whilst being linked in terms of the time frame.

Christina Philips’s Resisting Tate is an emotional read – Ruby has been through a lot and is still grieving, yet her attraction to Tate is off the charts. For sure, Tate is a real hottie, and I enjoyed how their relationship played out and how Ruby faced her demons. I found Ruby’s great-aunt to be a real character too!

I loved how in Mel Teshco’s Resisting Lachlan, Justine turned the tables on the ladies man Lachlan, and it is he who has to do the running. They are so good together and I was itching for Justine to put her trust in him, despite her misgivings.

Cathleen Ross’ Resisting Adam is a lovely second chance romance. Trust, secrets and forgiveness are key themes as Adam tries to keep his ex safe from the wildfires, whilst trying to persuade her to make a go of the attraction they still have for one another. I enjoyed how Emma grew in strength, both because of and despite her past. As with the other romances in the collection I was urging them on to confront and overcome their personal issues.

The collection is perfect for readers looking for contemporary romances which pack in some serious steam and emotion.

Goodreads

Excerpt

I had dreamed of kissing my best friend for as long as I could remember. Now, here I was in the middle of the most romantic place in Plentiful, his lips pressed to mine and my heart pounding in my chest. Who was this man? Why was he kissing me? How had I missed how much he’d changed over the last year? Was my Mattie finely going to rise up and take control? I sighed again.

Mattie was kissing me.

Finally, my soul was connected with what it had needed for twenty years. Its mate.

His lips left mine slowly, and I waited. I waited to open my eyes and find out all of this was a dream. Instead, I opened them to the lake blue of his. I dropped my arms from around his neck and brought one hand to my lips in a haze of shock and lust.

“Why—why did you do that?” My voice shook from the array of emotions coursing through me. I was drowning in the love that swelled inside my heart for this man. I couldn’t catch my breath, and I wasn’t sure I ever would again.

He ran his thumb over my lips with tenderness and wonder. “Because I’ve been pretending that I haven’t wanted to for years.”

“And now you’re done pretending?” I was unsure of myself when I spoke, and I didn’t want to say too much before letting him explain.

“No,” he said with a dazed head shake. “Now I had to know if I was crazy.”

“You had to kiss me to know if you were crazy?” The thrumming of my heart paused in my chest while I waited for his answer.

His gaze darted away from mine while he put his thoughts together. The expression on his face and the stiffness of his spine told me he was looking for the right way to describe what he was feeling. “I guess curiosity is a better word.”

Anger filled me and overpowered the love I’d found just moments ago. I pushed myself up off the bench with purpose. “I’m thrilled to have appeased your curiosity then.” My voice and body shook from the soul-shattering pain of betrayal. “Don’t mistake me for one of your playthings, Mathias Jørgensen. You don’t get to use me to relieve an itch or as a gauge of how well you’re doing in the morality department.”

He opened his mouth, but I held up my hand. “I can’t, Mathias. No, you know what? You can’t. You can’t do this to me when you know how I feel about you. It’s not fair,” I whispered right before I disappeared into the trees, tears on my face and my life with him over.

I almost collapsed to one knee at the thought. Tears fell down my cheeks, and I wiped them away as I plowed on into a new life. I didn’t know where I was going to go or what I was going to do, but I did know it would no longer be with him. I might need someone to watch over me but allowing Mathias to be that someone was no longer possible. Not after that kiss. It was more than I’d ever dreamed it could be, and now the memory of it would break my heart over and over for the rest of my days.

Goodreads Review – “Absolute perfection here folks! So good! Definitely a must read!”

Brittany’s Book Blog – “This story was certainly romantic and very unique and I loved how the relationship between Gretchen and Weston developed.”

Goodreads Review – “This book is fantastic!

Loved this so much and was lucky enough to read it very early on.

Weston is super swoony.”

Excerpt:

“Thanks for the flowers. You shouldn’t have.”

“It’s my pleasure.”

“But this is getting kind of silly, Weston,” I say. “I know it was in the agreement that you could get me gifts but—”

“They’re just flowers, Grasshopper.” He stands and walks toward me. My whole body turns on every time he’s within five feet of me. I love it, but I also kind of hate it. No man has ever had this effect on me. Not even Donovan.

He takes my hand. “They were offered in apology. I’m not quite sure what I’m apologizing for, but last time we played, I upset you.”

I shake my head. “No, you didn’t.”

His brows furrow. “Don’t lie to me. I study people, Gretchen, and I’m very good at reading them. I knew you wanted me the first time I looked into your eyes, and I also know I upset you. You need to tell me what the matter is because I don’t want any secrets between us.”

I blow out a breath. I’m clearly not getting out of this.

“You’ve disappointed me.”

“How so?” he asks with wide eyes.

“I didn’t realize you were the kind of man who could be unfaithful.”

He shakes his head. “How do you mean?”

“The woman you mentioned…” I clarify. “The one you’re trying not to think about. Is she the reason you divorced your wife?”

He hesitates a long beat before speaking, and I wonder if I’ve just hit the nail on the head.

“Kind of… she had a lot to do with our separation,” he confesses. “Quite a lot in fact.”

“Were you having an affair with her?” I ask, desperate to know.

“No,” he says. “Not really. Not in the traditional sense.”

What the hell does that mean?

He blows out a huge breath. “Are you sure you want to hear this?”

I don’t hesitate to answer. “Positive.”

Excerpt:

He rakes a hand through his hair. “Please don’t interrupt me,” he says softly, and I shut the hell up.

“Let me explain this to you thoroughly, and then you can voice in. You can speak when I give you the go-ahead.”

Wow. Is he for real? “Okay, Sir.”

A hint of a smile traces his lips. He clicks his pen again. He’s still not looking at me. I really wish he would. “There clearly is a mutual attraction between us. That much can’t be denied,” he says and finally lifts his gaze to mine, and a frenzy of butterflies flood my insides.

He rubs the back of his neck. “I… I’ve always thought you were attractive, and when Rosetta insisted on you, I was a little hesitant but then I rationalized that you and I wouldn’t really be working together and would have minimal contact. Yet, I won’t deny that I looked forward to seeing you in my office for the next six months, if only to look.”

His words are arousing me, despite the fact that he’s being very matter-of-fact about it all. Everything about him is alluring; his soft spoken words, his long fingers toying with that silver pen, the curves of his shoulders in his dress shirt, and most of all, his intoxicating eyes.

“But… then circumstances changed, and we found ourselves drawn together. I knew it was wrong to ask you to join me for lunch, but I couldn’t help myself. I wanted to be near you.”

I remain silent. Not only because he’s ordered me to, but also because I am at a complete loss for words.

“Yes, you and I can take the next step, but given the social climate these days, and the Me Too movement in the workplace, which I fully support, one can never be too careful.”

I nod obediently.

He finally puts down his pen, and flattens his hands on his desk, on either side of a conspicuous red folder. “I need your full written consent before we can proceed.”

What?

“I really don’t think that is necessary—”

“I didn’t give you the go-ahead to speak yet.” He shifts uncomfortably in his seat. “I’m not done.”

I sit back, not believing the way he’s behaving, what he’s suggesting. I watch him intently as he flips open the red folder. I glance quickly at the heading on the sheet. It’s upside down, but I can still make it out. It reads: WORK PLAY AGREEMENT

I stifle a smile. He can’t be serious.

“I’ve pondered this incessantly and worked on this agreement all weekend,” he tells me, and I can’t believe what I’m hearing.

I notice the staple in the corner. It’s not just a simple one-page affair, it’s multiple pages.

Damn.

While I was getting my nails done with my friends, he was busy whipping this plan up. While I played with Ethan at the park, he was working on this. While I binge watched old episodes of Sex and the City, he was typing this report up. This is so hot.

He hands me a copy of the arrangement, all business. My fingers are trembling when I take it from him, still speechless. My heart is threatening to burst out of my chest.

He reaches for an extra pen and hands it to me. He then picks up his pen again, and stares down at his copy of the agreement. “I thought we could go through it together, and then you could give me your thoughts. I look forward to hearing them.”

“Do I…” I hesitate to talk. “Do I have the go-ahead to speak now?” I ask, half-submissive, half-snarky.

He smiles. “Yes… I’m sorry. I just wanted you to hear me out.”

“Okay… well, let’s look at this, shall we?”

My Review:

Steamy and heart warming ~ 5 stars

Gretchen finds that there is a lot more to her new boss than she ever imagined in this delightful boss/secretary romance… Indeed, I found The Boss Upstairs to be a wonderfully uplifting read with plenty of steam and captivating characters. Gretchen and Weston’s romance is sweet but it is also oozes sexual tension and plenty of hot scenes.

Both characters are mourning what they have lost and I liked how the author doesn’t shy away from exploring these issues in the book and how the characters confront their past full on, although this was difficult at times. I hugely enjoyed how the relationship between the couple develops and was as blindsided as Gretchen when Weston makes his move – his methods are so very naughty and there are some very funny moments! I loved that Gretchen is more than a match for him and I loved the games that ensue between them – it is such a sexy read.

Gretchen is a character I immediately warmed to – quirky, talented and devoted to her young son. I enjoyed how her new job and Weston give her a new lease of life. Weston likes control and Gretchen is only too pleased to play along. However, what happens when Weston tires of their games? Can Weston or Gretchen move on from their troubled past and forge a future together? I was invested in their relationship as they were just so right for each other.

The book is part of the Orchard Heights series, (a series that after reading this I am intrigued to read), but worked perfectly well as a standalone.

Recommended to readers of contemporary romance who like steamy reads with well rounded characters.
